Testing
The State of Illinois participates in the SAT® Suite of Assessments, which is an integrated series of tests on a common score scale. Reavis High School utilizes these assessments to measure student growth, learned skills, and increase students' opportunities to attend college and receive scholarships.
These tests include the and PSAT™ 8/9 for freshmen, PSAT™ 10 for sophomores, and SAT for juniors. Seniors are not required to participate in standardized testing. However, you may wish to take an ACT or SAT national test to improve your score for college admission, scholarship or placement testing purposes.
The PSAT 8/9 includes a Reading Test, a Writing and Language Test, and a Math Test. This is the first of the SAT suite of assessments. Students will take this test in the spring of their freshman year. Students earn points for the questions they answer correctly - there is no advantage to leaving them blank.
The PSAT 10 includes a Reading Test, a Writing and Language Test, and a Math Test. Students will take this test in the spring of their sophomore year. Students earn points for the questions they answer correctly - there is no advantage to leaving them blank.
The PSAT/NMSQT measures college and career readiness, as well as skills in reading, writing and language, and mathematics. Students can choose to take this optional test as practice in the fall of their sophomore year. They can also register for this test junior year to potentially qualify for scholarships. Additionally, the results are used to identify student eligibility for the National Merit® Scholarship Program, which is an academic competition for recognition and college scholarships. Reavis will host the PSAT/NMSQT in the North Gym on Wednesday, October 12th. The top 10% of juniors and 5% of sophomores are given priority to register for the test. Any interested juniors will receive an email on September 21st with a Google Form link to register. Registration will close on October 3rd or when max capacity is reached. The fee to take the test is $18 (fee waivers are available for students who receive free/reduced lunch).
The SAT is an aptitude test that measures a student's critical reading, writing, lauguage and mathematics skills. All juniors are mandated to take the SAT State Test as an Illinois graduation requirement. These test results are also widely used in college admissions. Test Optional
During the pandemic, colleges have introduced more flexibility and choice into the admissions process. Many have decided to adopt a “test-optional” policy regarding college entrance exams, either temporarily or permanently. This means students will have the option to decide whether or not they choose to submit standardized test scores with their application. Click on the links below to read more information from higher education organizations about applying test-optional and its impact on college admissions.
Should I apply with or without test scores?
This decision should be based on the individual student and the school(s) they're applying to. If you choose to apply without test scores, the school will likely place a bigger emphasis on the other components of your application (grades, GPA, personal statement, etc). We recommend visiting the website of each school you're planning to apply to to read the information on their test-optional policy and application recommendations. For example, The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign indicates on their website that they "encourage you to report your scores if you feel they accurately represent your ability." Please reach out to your counselor if you have additional questions about this.
